The Traffic Division in the 1st Municipal District handles all traffic tickets issued in the City of Chicago. This division is at the Richard J. Daley Center, Lower Level, 50 W. Washington St. The phone number is (312) 603-2000. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The division keeps records and collects fines for all cases that involve City of Chicago moving violations.

Five suburban districts serve the rest of Cook County. The 2nd District is in Skokie at 5600 Old Orchard Rd. The 3rd District is in Rolling Meadows at 2121 Euclid Ave. The 4th District is in Maywood at 1500 Maybrook Ave. The 5th District is in Bridgeview at 10220 S. 76th Avenue, and you can reach them at (708) 974-6288. The Cook County Online Case Search is the main tool for finding traffic court records in Cook County. You can search by name, case number, or citation number. The system shows case status, next court date, charges, and fine amounts. This is a free tool open to anyone. You do not need an account to search.

Keep in mind that the data you see online is the electronic docket. It has brief summaries of court documents and events in a case. The case data available online is not the official record of the court. Updates may take a few days to show up. Under 55 ILCS 5/4-2001, the Circuit Clerk must maintain all court records, but the online tool is just a summary view of those records.

Cook County Traffic Ticket Options

When you get a traffic ticket in Cook County, check the bottom right corner. It tells you if a court date is needed. A ticket marked "No Court Appearance Required" means you can pay the fine without going to court. You have three choices for handling your Cook County traffic court case:

  • Option A: Plead guilty, pay the fine, and accept a conviction on your record
  • Option B: Plead guilty, pay the fine, complete traffic school, and avoid a conviction
  • Option C: Plead not guilty and ask for a court hearing date

If your ticket says "Court Appearance Required," you must show up on the date listed. This applies to serious offenses like DUI, driving on a suspended license, and reckless driving in Cook County. You can not change your court date by phone. No automatic continuances are given. Under 625 ILCS 5/, the Illinois Vehicle Code sets the rules for which violations need a court appearance and which do not.

Note: Court supervision in Cook County follows the same state rules. You must not have had supervision in the last 12 months, and you must be 18 or older at the time of the violation.

Traffic Court Fees in Cook County

Fines and costs for traffic cases in Cook County vary by violation. Under 705 ILCS 135/, the Criminal and Traffic Assessment Act sets the fee structure. Most minor traffic tickets in Cook County cost between $120 and $250 when you add in all court costs and assessments. More serious violations cost more.

You can pay Cook County traffic fines online, by mail, or in person at the clerk's office. Online payments go through the case search portal. You can also use CourtMoney at 1-877-222-4668 or courtmoney.com. In person, visit the Traffic Division at the Daley Center or your suburban district courthouse. Cash, checks, money orders, and credit cards are accepted at most locations in Cook County.
