Find Elgin Traffic Court Records
Elgin traffic court records are managed by two different county court systems because the city straddles the border of Kane County and Cook County. Most Elgin traffic cases go through Kane County and the 16th Judicial Circuit. Some tickets issued in the Cook County portion of Elgin go through the Cook County 3rd Municipal District in Rolling Meadows. You can search both systems online. With a population of nearly 115,000, Elgin is one of the larger cities in the state and generates a high volume of traffic court cases each year.
Elgin Quick Facts
Which County Handles Elgin Traffic Cases
Elgin sits in both Kane County and Cook County. Most of the city is in Kane County, so the majority of Elgin traffic cases are handled by the Kane County Circuit Clerk. The Kane County main office is at 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles, Illinois 60174. You can call (630) 232-3413 for help. Circuit Clerk Theresa Barreiro runs the office. Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The Kane County Circuit Clerk processes all traffic citations issued in the Kane County portion of Elgin. The 16th Judicial Circuit covers Kane County. Traffic court is held at the Kane County Courthouse and branch court locations. The Elgin Branch Court handles many local traffic matters without requiring a trip to St. Charles.
For the Cook County portion of Elgin, traffic cases go to the 3rd Municipal District in Rolling Meadows at 2121 Euclid Avenue, Rolling Meadows, IL 60008. Phone: (847) 818-2851. Check your ticket to see which county issued it. That determines which court system handles your case.
The City of Elgin website has general city resources, but traffic violations go through the county court systems, not the city.
Search Elgin Traffic Court Records Online
For Kane County cases, the Kane County Court Portal is the main search tool. You can use Smart Search to find cases by name or case number. Case numbers use a 4-digit year plus case type plus number (for example, 2024MR3). For name searches, enter last name then first name. The system is party-name based, so names must be spelled exactly as they appear in the system.
You can also access case records through the Kane County Online Court Records page. Click on the eServices icon on the homepage and then on Search Court Records. The 16th Judicial Circuit website has information about court procedures and locations in Kane County.
For Cook County cases, use the Cook County Online Case Search. Enter a name, case number, or citation number. The system shows case status, court dates, charges, and fines. Both portals are free and do not need an account.
Note: Online records in both Kane and Cook County are summary dockets, not the official court record.
Elgin Traffic Ticket Options
When you get a traffic ticket in Elgin, check the bottom of the citation. It tells you if a court appearance is needed. Under 625 ILCS 5/, the Illinois Vehicle Code sets the rules. Minor tickets marked "No Court Appearance Required" can be paid without going to court.
You have three options. Plead guilty and pay the fine. Plead guilty, pay, and take traffic school to keep it off your record. Or plead not guilty and request a hearing. Court supervision under 730 ILCS 5/5-6-1 may be available if you are 18 or older and have not had supervision for a traffic violation in the past 12 months.
- Plead guilty and pay the fine (conviction on record)
- Plead guilty, pay fine, complete traffic school (no conviction)
- Plead not guilty and request a hearing date
Serious offenses like DUI, reckless driving, or driving on a suspended license always require a court appearance. For these charges, it is wise to bring an attorney or ask for the public defender.
Elgin Traffic Court Fees
Fines for Elgin traffic cases follow the statewide structure under 705 ILCS 135/, the Criminal and Traffic Assessment Act. Most minor tickets cost $120 to $250 with all assessments. The specific amount depends on the violation and which county handles the case.
For Kane County cases, you can pay in person at the Circuit Clerk's office in St. Charles or at the Elgin branch court. Online payment may be available through the Circuit Clerk's website. For Cook County cases, use the Cook County case search portal or CourtMoney at 1-877-222-4668. Both systems accept cash, checks, money orders, and credit cards in person. If you miss a payment deadline, added fees and a possible license suspension can result.
Elgin Driving Record Abstracts
Traffic court records and driving records are different. The county circuit clerk keeps case files. The Illinois Secretary of State keeps your driving abstract. Your abstract shows license status, all violations, accidents, and any suspensions. Elgin residents can get their driving abstract at the Secretary of State website for $21.
After an Elgin traffic case closes, the court sends conviction data to the Secretary of State. This takes a few weeks. Check both your court record and driving abstract for the full picture.
